Each time a file is written to your hard
drive, whether during a file save operation or file copy or program
installation, files are written to your drive to fit the first available gap. If
the file is bigger than the gap, it saves part of the file to that gap and then
next part to the next available gap. Each time you delete files, more and more
gaps appear. When your PC tries to read a fragmented file, the hard drive heads
have to move all around the drive to pickup all the pieces of the file instead
of doing it in one read motion. The more fragmented the file, the longer it
takes to load that file.
When you installed Flight Simulator X onto your
hard drive, it installed 44,000 files and about 15 Gigabytes of data. About
20,000 of those files became fragmented to varying degrees as they were

framerates but more in loading times of the program, and especially in the
loading of scenery especially photoscenery such as MegaScenery. If performance
is reduced due to file fragmentation you are waiting much longer for things to
load and to snap into the highest resolution display while you are flying.

improve your hard drive performance in loading those files by around 30%. Not

You hard drive heads move around your
drive to load the files that are requested by programs. The more scattered your
files are around the drive the slower this process is since the hard drive heads
need to travel great distances around the drive to collect files. The closer
your files are together on the drive, the faster the drive will load those files
because the hard drive heads don't have to travel as far. Travel times for hard
drive heads average around 8 Milliseconds and up to 20 mS - these are very small
times but significant when it comes to loading thousands of files. Optimizing
your hard drive reduces these seek times to as little as 1 and 2 mS - which is 4
to 10 times faster.
The next important issue is where your files are
placed on your hard drive - files that exist on the outer tracks of the hard
drive platters are transferred to memory twice as fast as files that are on the
inner tracks.
So file placement optimization works to place
your key files closer together (seek confinement) and on the outer tracks of
your hard drive platters (for faster transfer rates). And at the same time it
defrags your files.
